Quote Time: Yves Saint Laurent

Time of Yves Saint Laurent quotes:

Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936, in France. He moved to Paris at the age of 17, immediately entering the world fashion.

“Fashion fades. Style is eternal.”

He met Christian Dior in 1954 and became his assistant. After his mentor's death in 1957 he was named the chief stylist for Dior fashion house, triumphing at his very first show with introducing a new silhouette -  narrow shoulder above wide skirts.

“I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - all I hope for in my clothes.”

Called up for French military service in 1960, homosexual Saint Laurent had a nervous breakdown. By the time he recovered, he had already been relaced at Dior. His friend Pierre Berge stepped in, organizing the financial backing for Saint Laurent to set up his own fashion house in 1962.

“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”

The pair built up a multi-million-dollar fashion, perfumes and accessories business which constantly broke the mould, anticipating modern styles.

“I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them confidence”

Saint Laurent presented his last haute couture show in January 2001 and officially retired in 2002. In October 2006 he fell in a Paris street and was filmed lying motionless in the road for several minutes until emergency services arrived to help him.

“I want to thank all the women who have worn my clothes, the famous and the unknown, who have been so faithful to me and given me so much joy.”

French fashion king Yves Saint Laurent died at the age of 71, on June 1 2008
